Biography
Kay Adams is a fantasy author living in big-city Ontario, surrounded by a massive TBR pile and an equally massive teapot collection. A graduate of the University of Toronto’s Celtic Studies program, Kay began weaving worlds and creating characters using a mix of folkloric fascination and celestial curiosity. When she isn’t writing, she can be found scrolling TikTok until her time limit runs out, existing in the same vicinity as her two cats Goose and Ducky, or staring at her rainbow library until a book she wants to read magically materializes—except the books she really wants to read are the ones she’s writing.

Climb the tower. Kill the princess.
Evhen, princess—no, queen—of Vodaeard, is on a revenge mission. After witnessing her parents' brutal murder by the king of Marama and the horror of his undead army, she's vowed to kill his daughter. It'll be poetic justice and also take away his supernatural edge in the war. But when she realizes the princess might be an ignorant pawn, she changes course and hides her royal identity—after all, she can't trust an enemy, no matter how beautiful she is.
Stay alive. Break the curse.
Princess Kalei of Marama is moon-blessed, allowing her to resurrect her kingdom's loyal subjects. But when she's attacked in her safe lighthouse by a fiery pirate, her worldview is shattered once she learns what her power is really being used for. Determined to prove her innocence and willingness to stop her father, she has no choice but to trust her would-be killer to safely deliver her to the Vodaeardean princess. But who can she trust in when it seems Captain Evhen is not the only one who wants her dead?

The Path to Publication
I’ll admit—I got lucky. Publishing a book is no easy feat. Authors go through years of rejections. Hundreds of queries, dismissed. Until the right person says “yes,” and then it’s another several years of editing and pitching and more editing and finally. Publication. I seemed to have skipped several steps, and it only makes the imposter syndrome worse. I queried one person with this book, and now it’s on shelves (front-facing!) in all major book retailers. So I don’t really
The Romantasy Debate
I’m a writer. Of course I’m going to have controversial opinions about the romantasy debate. But first, what is romantasy? Well…that’s the question. And no one has a straightforward answer. It is a topic widely debated in the writing (and reading) community online. And while I am by no means an expert on writing (or marketing, because let’s be honest, “romantasy” is a marketing term), I do have enough opinions to write a whole blog post about it. Romantasy has
Queerness in My Books
It’s June, so what better time to write about the queer identities in my books than the start of Pride Month? Of course, pride doesn’t have a start or end date. It’s not a sale in a store. But it does have a beginning. And I want to talk about mine, and how it influences my writing. The last post I wrote for pride month was three years ago, when we were a few months into a pandemic that shut
What My Editing Process Revealed
Hey, it’s Kay. I recently finished editing my debut (coming next year), and it revealed quite a lot about my writing process, so I thought I’d share how I edit and what I learned. My drafting process is pretty simple—write it wrong, then write it right. My zero drafts are almost always completely rewritten, with the bare bones remaining as a foundation to build upon. Some paragraphs are kept, but it’s almost always an entirely different book between drafts, and
I Have A Book Deal
It’s still so surreal. A few weeks ago, I signed my legal name on a contract for my authorial debut! My Rapunzel with necromancers book is coming from Inimitable Books in early 2024, and I couldn’t be more excited to share this experience with my close writing friend, Sam! We’re part of the first four signed with Zara Hoffman over at Inimitable Books. In fact, Sam’s cover reveal will be happening January 2, and I’ll be sharing it on my
